The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting colder and sometimes you get a dump of snow and shouldn’t or can’t leave the house. But what to do with your dog on such a day? Here are a few great ideas how to avoid your dog becoming a bored couch potato:
Hike and Seek: First, get your dogs favourite Tiny Treat flavour and ask him/her to sit down. Go to another room and find a hiding place. Remember to take your dog’s favourite treat with you so that you can reward him/her immediately when she/he finds you. When you’re in your hiding place call your dog and as soon as she/he found you throw a party! Give the treat and prize for the great effort. When your dog gets really good in finding you, try to make it harder, and even try to hide in places where you’re absolutely invisible, like under the bed or in the wardrobe… It’s also a great way to train and exercise the ‘re-call’ without any distractions!
Hide his/her treats: Another great entertainment on a rainy day is make your dog work finding his meal/treats! Get your dog’s favourite Tiny Treats and ask your dog to sit down. Then go into another room and start hiding the Tiny Treats. Be creative and choose spots that are easy to find but also places that are very tricky to get to. If the treats are too easy to find you will end up with a very round dog and if they’re too hard to find your dog will just give up. So make sure that you have a good combination of both levels. Great spots are, under a pillow, behind the sofa, under the carpet, in a open container that is placed upside down on the floor with a treat hiding inside, under the dog’s bed, hiding treats on you, like sitting or standing a treat… the options are endless….. : )
Sock it: One of my favourite games on a rainy day is, to get one of my dogs pulling my sock off for me! And here is what you need: Tiny Treats, your foot in a sock and lots of courage! Because it can tickle!! : ) Wear short socks, pulled a little way over your toes (the better your dog becomes, the further you can pull them). Now call your dog and let them pull off your socks. Make sure you will associate the ‘pulling-act’ with a command, like “pull” and perhaps touch a sock to your dog’s mouth so he can get the idea…. For each sock the dog pulls off he/she gets a treat! It’s a fun game and the dog has to concentrate and therefore his/her brain gets stimulated! Give it a go!!
